The 2026 Cannes Films Brought to Life by Sony Cameras
By: SonyCine Team
From small contemplative stories to big breakout hits, the 2026 Cannes Film Festival showcased dozens of films, showering filmmakers with standing ovations lasting upwards of 20 minutes.
To capture these films, cinematographers utilized both traditional film and digital cinema cameras to express their creative vision. Of these, 11 films were shot on Sony cameras, including VENICE, VENICE 2, BURANO, and FX3.
Cannes 2026 Films Shot on Sony VENICE
Titanic Ocean | DP Raphael Vandenbussche
Directed by Konstantina Kotzamani and shot by DP Raphael Vandenbussche, Titanic Ocean explores the world of a Japanese boarding school that trains teenage girls to become professional mermaids.
To capture a look of light being diffused through water, Vandenbussche shot on the VENICE 2 with rehoused Soviet lenses from Ironglass for their unique focus fall-off and highlight bloom.
Marie-Madeleine | DP Nicolas Canniccioni
A Haitian-French drama written, directed by, and starring Gessica Généus, Marie-Madeleine follows a carefree sex worker in Jacmel, Haiti, who falls for a devout evangelical man.
Shot by DP Nicolas Canniccioni, the cinematographer needed a camera that was adaptable to the shooting environment and the actor’s performances. To support this workflow, Canniccioni chose the VENICE 2 paired with an Angénieux 17-80 zoom lens for its low-light capabilities and rendition of skin tones to create an observational perspective.
Madame (Le Triangle d'or) | DP David Chambille
Following the story of Laura, who gets a job working for the mistress of a Saudi sheik in a luxurious Parisian mansion, Madame (Le Triangle d’or) is the first feature film from director Hélène Rosselet-Ruiz.
Lensed by DP David Chambille on the Sony VENICE 2, the film used a set of vintage Kowa R primes chosen to evoke a portrait look. With the VENICE 2 sensor's high sensitivity, Chambille was able to choose the ideal aperture for each shot, regardless of lighting conditions.
Full Phil | DP Quentin Dupieux
Starring Kristen Stewart and Woody Harrelson, Full Phil tells the story of a wealthy American business magnate who tries to reconnect with his daughter during an opulent trip to Paris.
In a dual role, the film was shot and directed by DP Quentin Dupieux who chose the VENICE 2 and a set of Vantage MiniHAWK anamorphic lenses.
Ulysse | DP Emmanuelle Collinot
Directed by Laetitia Masson and shot by DP Emmanuelle Collinot, Ulysse explores the world of a sociology researcher whose child is diagnosed with a genetic condition.
With a cast that featured very young children, Masson and Collinot needed to be quick and reactive with their camera, choosing the Sony VENICE to capture the film entirely handheld with a mix of spherical and anamorphic lenses, such as the BLACKWING Tribe7 series, the Atlas Orion 25mm anamorphic, a Canon 300-600mm zoom, and an Angénieux 56-152mm anamorphic zoom lens.
Due to a documentary-style approach with limited lighting, Collinot leaned heavily on the Dual ISO of the VENICE, which enabled them to capture a wide dynamic range across various lighting conditions.
Cannes 2026 Films Shot on Sony BURANO
Les Survivants du Che | DP Raphaël Rueb
A documentary recounting the untold story of Che Guevara’s last surviving comrades 60 years after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Les Survivants du Che blends archival footage with animation and exclusive interviews.
Directed by Christophe Dimitri Réveille and captured by DP Raphaël Rueb, the film's visual language blended a subjective point of view with compositions that closely matched the survivors' story.
The Sony BURANO, paired with the Angénieux 22-60mm and 68-250mm zooms, enabled Rueb to capture both styles. With its versatile, compact design, low-light capabilities, and 8.6K resolution, the cinematographer was able to operate in a solo documentary configuration, capture scenes lit only by moonlight, and use the high-resolution images as a base for transitions into the animated portions of the film.
La Gradiva | DP Pierre Mazoyer
Directed by Marine Atlan in her directorial debut, La Gradiva follows a group of French high-school students who travel to Naples on a school trip to discover the ruins of Pompeii and the bodies petrified by Vesuvius.
Shot by Marine Atlan and DP Pierre Mazoyer on the Sony BURANO, which was chosen for the way its grain and colors were expressed when the image was underexposed, the film explored a precise, controlled realism before diving into the realm of lyricism. To lens these different layers, the team chose a series of lenses, including a set of Full Frame Kowa primes, a Canon K-35 25-120mm zoom, and a Panavision Lightweight 27-68mm zoom paired with a Sony FX6.
Congo Boy | DP Adrien Lallau
A musical drama directed by Rafiki Fariala, Congo Boy is a coming-of-age story that follows a 17-year-old whose family is displaced by war in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Captured by DP Adrien Lallau, the film had an extremely small crew with almost no conventional lighting. To handle these creative limitations, Lallau chose the Sony BURANO for its Dual ISO, lightweight design, internal ND filters, and low-light performance that gave him the ability to craft fluid handheld compositions that moved freely through spaces.
Paired with a set of Leitz SUMMICRON-C lenses, the first half of the film was shot in the Super 35 mode before transitioning into Full Frame as the story became more intimate.
Other Cannes 2026 Films Supported by Sony Cameras
Gabin | DP François Chambe
A feature documentary directed by Maxence Voiseux, Gabin is a decade-spanning project that follows the youngest of the Jourdel family on his journey from age 8 to 18.
Shot by François Chambe, Gabin was first captured on a set of Cooke S4 lenses with the Sony F55, which was chosen for its versatility, robustness, price, and picture quality. For the last two years of the project, Chambe needed a camera that shared the same shooting philosophy. For this, he chose the Sony BURANO while keeping the same lens set.
The Beloved (El Ser Querido) | DP Alex de Pablo
Starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo, The Beloved explores the relationship between acclaimed film director Esteban Martínez and his daughter, a middling actress. Directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and shot by DP Alex de Pablo, the film used a total of 10 different film and digital cameras with eight different lens sets.
Among these tools, the Sony FX3 and Sony HVR-Z1E were used to lease the random and unconscious creation of narratives, constant transformation over time, and the search for clarity through multiple perspectives.
Butterfly Jam | DP Jomo Fray
A French drama film directed by Kantemir Balagov in his English-language debut, Butterfly Jam, tells the story of a 16-year-old wrestler and his family’s struggling diner.
Shot on three different digital cameras by DP Jomo Fray, the film's visual language was a constant push-and-pull between tenderness and intolerance. In support of this, Fray chose the VENICE 2 as part of his trio, which were all paired with a set of Leitz THALIA 65 lenses to create what Fray called “soft objectivism.”
