Claudio Miranda, ASC Tests the New Sony FX5

By: SonyCine Team

The reveal of the new Sony FX5 brings a new camera into the Cinema Line, expanding not only the tools that creatives have on offer, but also putting new capabilities into the hands of filmmakers.

To test how the new camera performs on set, cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC (F1, Top Gun: Maverick) took the FX5, along with the VENICE 2 and FX3, into the California desert to compare workflow, light values, color range, and menu and functions.

Between capturing the harsh California sun reflecting off polished chrome and varied skin tones during a night scene lit entirely by campfire, here’s what Miranda captured during his tests.

Exploring the Capabilities of the FX5

With the VENICE 2, FX3, and FX5 at his disposal, Miranda had a vast range of capabilities in his toolkit. After working with the three cameras in tandem on this shoot, the FX5 surprised the veteran cinematographer in what it could achieve in such a small package.

To see how the Sony FX5 supports other filmmakers, read our interview with director Gareth Edwards on his work with the camera or check out this short doc created by Danny Gevirtz.
