“Resident Evil” Director Zach Cregger and Sony VENICE 2 Reinvent an Iconic Horror Franchise
By: SonyCine Team
From video games and comics to television and movies, Resident Evil is a series that has infected every entertainment medium. What began as a 1996 video game created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara for the PlayStation video game console has become a behemoth that continues to redefine the horror genre.
After seven feature films, director Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) has been given the creative reins to reinvent the franchise for the big screen. The 2026 film, titled Resident Evil, refocuses the story on a medical courier who agrees to deliver a last-minute package to Raccoon City General Hospital.
A Real-Time Horror Journey
Joining Cregger in capturing this new version of Resident Evil, and the zombies that inhabit its world, is Oscar-nominated cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, ASC (News of the World). Using the Sony VENICE 2 and the VENICE 2 Extension System, also known as the RIALTO 2, the film explores tight compositions in near real-time.
Sony joined director Zach Cregger on set to explore how he and Wolski used the Sony VENICE 2 and RIALTO 2, giving the creative duo new opportunities to craft a visual language worthy of rebooting an iconic franchise.
Resident Evil premiered in theaters on September 18, 2026. See the film on the big screen to experience the composition possibilities offered by the RIALTO 2.
