New Major Firmware Updates Bring New Creative Functionality to the Sony Cinema Line

Several Sony Cinema Line cameras are receiving firmware updates throughout 2026. This continued support is an important focus for Sony to support the filmmaking community. The Sony Cinema Line is built with the future in mind, and new updates allow each camera to evolve with the needs of its users.
In 2026, the Sony BURANO, VENICE 2, FX6, and FR7 will receive updates to increase functionality and provide additional creative options. Firmware updates will be available for free download!
Sony VENICE 2 on the set of "Andor" Season 1
Sony VENICE 2 Firmware v4.1
The VENICE 2 is a production workhorse that has been a crucial toolkit for cinematographers searching for creative freedom and versatility on set. This is the sixth firmware update for the VENICE 2, with v5.0 being planned for late 2026 or later.
Firmware v4.1 for the VENICE 2 is currently available and includes:
- Horizontal adjustment value storage in the VENICE Extension System Mini to support projects shot with different rigging scenarios.
- A redesign of the EL Zone System™ screen.
- The ability to record the moire alert maximum level in the metadata to help post workflow that includes footage with fine patterns or shot on LED walls.

Sony BURANO Firmware v2.1 and v3.0
Released in March 2024, the BURANO been seen on location capturing feature films and TV series, as well as atop mountain glaciers in the hands of expedition filmmakers.
Firmware v2.1 is currently available for download and includes:
- A Genlock Sync Shift function for Virtual Production usage.
- SDI output and HDMI output when 240fps is selected for S35 1.9K 16:9.
Firmware v3.0 will be released in May 2026 or later and will include:
- New Recording Formats: FF 5.8K 6:5 for anamorphic shooting.
- New Recording Formats: S35crop 3.8K 16:9 up to 120 fps.
- RDD18 metadata will be added to the SDI output in Monitor FHD mode.
- Peaking improvements, such as adding edge type (Rising Edge / Falling Edge / Both) to the current color peaking functionality, and highlighting the edge.
- S700P command compatibility (FPS, Shutter*, Saturation).
- Import LUTs from Monitor & Control/SDK
- Addition of multi-selector usage for the real-time tracking auto-focus feature.
- Addition of HLG Mild in custom shooting mode
- Support for 3D LUTs that include scaling processing
- Wi-Fi (5 GHz) channel bandwidth selection
- SDR Emulated Preview Display on EVF
* Angle/Auto Shutter will not be supported

Sony FX6 on location
Sony FX6 Firmware v6.0 and FR7 Firmware v4.0
While the FX6 and FR7 share several similarities, such as sensor size and ISO sensitivity, their design and use cases differ widely. The FX6 thrives in the worlds of reality TV and documentary, while the FR7 has become a staple of live production environments.
In March 2026 or later, the FX6 will receive Firmware v6.0 and will include:
- The FX6 will receive the new “BIG 6” menu, similar to the BURANO and VENICE, allowing filmmakers to check and adjust frequently used functions during shooting.
- Updated shooting screen layout - black borders.
- Support for Blackmagic RAW recording via HDMI Video Output.
- Support for HLG Mild in custom shooting mode.
The FR7 Firmware v4.0 is currently available and includes:
- Support for OpenTrackIO, the new standard for Virtual Production camera tracking, designed by the SMPTE RIS OSVP group.
