Filmmaker Maksym Varenyk Recreates Iconic “La La Land” Composition for the ShotDeck Recreations Contest

By: SonyCine Team

Maksym Varenyk is on a mission to redefine LGBTQ+ representation on film and television. His narrative work has screened throughout the world, including Outfest, Out On Film, Queerbee LGBT Film Festival, and Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival.

Before the Ukrainian-born filmmaker embraced storytelling through the visual medium, he dazzled the world as a competitive figure skater. Fitting that he would find himself recreating an iconic composition from one of his favorite films, the music and dance spectacle of La La Land

Crafted for the 2025 ShotDeck Recreations Contest, Varenyk utilized his trusted Sony FX3 and shot in the same LA location used by the film. He even sourced a near perfect costume match and hand-painted the tap shoes himself.

Check out the post below for more behind the scenes.
