VIDEO: Know Your: VENICE Extension System

This video is the first of a series called "Know Your..." Some will be about VENICE, and others will be about FX9. The series will cover specific aspects and features of the cameras in short-form video, with "how to" steps for configurations, setup and features, and also offer further insight into the cameras. These short videos, created by the Sony DMPC, are designed for quick consumption by production crew - nuggets of information that can be referenced as needed.

This first video is an easy step-by-step demonstration showing how to set up the VENICE Extension System, which can extend the Sony VENICE camera body up to 18 ft from the image sensor.

3 VENICE Extension System Sample Builds

Ryan Campbell has been working in film, and framing images, for 15 years. He's worked with a who’s-who of the industry on everything from commercials, features and TV, to new media and lab experiments. If you've had a shot or situation and your initial question was, “How should we...?” Ryan is potentially the one who, working modestly behind the scenes, provided the solution for your producers, directors, DPs, camera operators, underwater operators, drone operators, ACs, DITs, gaffers and key grips. With the rise in popularity of the VENICE, he’s frequently asked “How should we build the VENICE Extension System?” These are some of the ways that Ryan answers. For the uninitiated, let’s start at the beginning. Since its release, the Sony VENICE has proven its ability to create a fantastic image while being able to manipulate the frame size, color, and workflow to meet the needs of any project. Earlier this year the VENICE achieved another accomplishment, the 2020 SOC Technical Achievement Award for the VENICE Extension System. This extension system allows you to separate the sensor block from the camera body and operate it remotely via a tether back to the body itself. The VENICE Extension System was making social distancing cool before social distancing was a thing, providing 9ft of range between the lens and the body, with another 9ft extension available for a total of up to 18ft (5.5m). VENICE Extension System creates an extremely lightweight and compact setup out of an already very powerful camera, shaving significant size and weight from normal studio builds without any loss of image quality. This setup allows for an easy handheld mode, enables you to locate it into tiny spaces, keeps stabilization systems lightweight, allows use of larger lenses while maintaining a smaller profile, facilitates faster abilities for motion control rigs, use of body mounts, and several other situations that you wouldn’t expect from a full-frame cinema camera.

New Snap Original "Action Royale" Relies on Sony VENICE Rialto to Bring Cinematic Quality to the Small Screen

Action Royale is the latest release from Snap Originals, a new slate of made-for-mobile original shows on Snapchat. Created by Jacob Motz, the ten-episode series is a coming-of-age thriller about a teenager who starts an underground eSports gambling ring to pay off his father's debts. Unfortunately, he and his gaming-phenom best friend soon find themselves in over their heads in a dangerous world. Although intended to be watched on the app, director of photography Oren Soffer and directors Igor Martinovic and Maria Juranic designed the series to look like a big-screen feature. They chose to shoot on the Sony VENICE in Rialto format to help create a look that would translate to audiences watching on a smartphone. In addition, they wanted a camera that could handle both bright daylight and challenging low-light environments.
