Cool Third-Party Accessories for the BURANO
By: SonyCine Team
The BURANO is Sony’s premier cinema camera for single operators and small crews, with the camera body serving as a platform to create a variety of builds. Here are some popular and new third-party accessories that can complete your kit.

WOODEN CAMERA D-BOX and B-BOX SYSTEM
The D-BOX is a popular addition to the camera, snapping onto the existing V-mount battery plate on the rear of the BURANO. On the rear of the unit is either another V-mount battery plate or an Anton Bauer Gold Mount receiver which you can attach a battery to. The D-box has two 12v Lemo outputs, a 12v PTap output and a 24v 3-pin Fischer output. These allow you to connect a wide variety of cinematography accessories to the camera. This plate also performs an important function by providing a power standoff to the main camera body. If there is a problem with the power draw of certain accessories or a short circuit somewhere, the D-Box will blow a fuse and prevent the camera from receiving any abnormal power, saving precious internal boards that can down your camera for extended periods of time. For more accessory heavy cine-style builds, the new B-BOX accessory can be added and mounted to the rear side of the camera, near the SDI outputs, it allows for two additional 2-pin 12v Lemo ports, and one more 12V PTap and 24V Fischer connector. It is connected to the D-box by an included jumper cable.

BRIGHT TANGERINE MATTE BOXES
A great way to add optical control to your lens setup is by adding a matte box. This allows you to control the stray light on set or on location and make sure your lenses are capturing the contrast and flares that you want, and none that you don’t. It also allows for the use of glass filters. Having a way to mount a high quality IRND on your BURANO can be essential in certain environments, as well as the ability to use popular filters like Tiffen Glimmerglass or Schneider Hollywood Black Magic, or even an optical flat to protect the front element of your cine lens during stunts. The top and side flags allow for more control of light. Aside from the practical advantages, matte boxes elevate the visual status of the camera. Bright Tangerine has a variety of matte boxes from the compact Atom model with its rubber shade, to the Misfit Kick which allows expansion from 1-stage to 3-stage easily, all the way up to the Misfit Six which can be used on very large cine primes and zooms. All these models can be converted from clamp-on to rod mount as well. Bright Tangerine equipment is designed for no-compromise hard daily use on real film sets.

BITPART BITBOX MINI
The BURANO's ethernet connector on the rear of the camera allows for incredible access to menus and camera parameters. The Bitbox Mini from BitPart allows for a simple secure wireless connection between the camera and another web enabled device. There is no configuration page, and it does not require making a mesh network. It simply operates on a 915Mhz open frequency and operates more like an ethernet cable that is wireless. This frequency band is not used for Wi-Fi or cellular signals, so it is often much less crowded than busy Wi-Fi areas. It must be connected to another BitPart unit, the Bitbox, which functions as a base station. Powered by a simple 2-pin Lemo connector and allowing a wide variety of voltages (4.5-36v) it makes network connectivity a breeze. Designed by some of the top DITs in the film business to complete an often-complicated task with ease. Range varies but has been tested as up to 3 crowded city blocks in downtown Manhattan (one of the densest frequency environments in the world) and up to a mile in wide open spaces.

TILTA NUCLEUS NANO II
The original Nucleus system broke tradition by enabling remote focus at an entry-level price, and the new Nano II has taken that a step further. With a base system price of under $250 this has become a must have. Powered by USB-C, the motor unit attaches to 15mm rods, and the tiny handset fits in the palm of your hand to allow smooth focus pulls from a distance. Critical for use with geared cine lenses, this setup can also transmit control data to gimbal lens motors from DJI. Maximum range in ideal conditions is up to 300 ft (100m).
The controls on the base unit include a high precision wheel and a circular touch screen reminiscent of a large smartwatch. This allows for lens mapping, setting limits, and adjusting zoom and iris as well.
Users can expand the system to up to 4 channels of motor control by pairing with the new Nucleus Nano II Control Handle (sold separately). It also has backwards compatibility with the previous Nucleus models and other Tilta wireless products.

KINEFINITY EAGLE E-VIEWFINDER
Featuring a Micro-OLED 1080p display, this EVF operates on an SDI input and allows for a dedicated EVF for critical operating. As this does not plug into the existing EVF connector on the BURANO, the Sony EVF panel can be attached to a NATO rail or a variety of other positions and can operate as a touch screen and menu browsing monitor as well as a small camera top monitor in this configuration. The Micro-OLED screen guarantees a nicely contrasted image with rich black levels. The eyepiece has an adjustable diopter from -6D to +2D. With a weight of merely 348 grams, it fits well on a small light BURANO package without adding extra bulk. Operator creature comforts come in the form of exposure controls like waveform, histogram and false color as well as peaking and focus mag.
