The 76th Emmy Nominations Reveal The Creative Power of The Sony VENICE

The 76th Emmy Nominations are officially live and some incredible shows have garnered well-deserved praise.

Among them, FX’s Shōgun has 25 nominations, which is the most in the drama category this year. Netflix’s The Crown, carries on with 19 nominations and Apple TV’s new series Sugar, has been nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Half-Hour Series.

This success stems from the quality of each production and it’s worth noting that all three projects were shot on the Sony VENICE cinema camera, which can also be seen throughout many different projects nominated for an Emmy.

Outstanding Cinematography

Both The Crown and Shōgun have been nominated twice in the Outstanding Cinematography for a One Hour Series, nabbing 4 out of the 6 available spots. 

From The Crown, Sophia Olsson, FSF has been nominated for her episode Ritz and Adriano Goldman, ASC, BSC, ABC has been nominated for Sleep, Dearie Sleep.

For Shōgun, DP Christopher Ross, BSC has been nominated for his episode Anjin, and Sam McCurdy, ASC, BSC was nominated for his episode Crimson Sky

On Season 6, the creative team behind The Crown paired the Sony VENICE with Cooke S4s while Shōgun DPs Christopher Ross and Sam McCurdy filmed the series on the Original Sony VENICE. 

Richard Rutkowski, ASC, DP for the series Sugar, has been nominated for the episode Starry Eyed. The creative team utilized the Sony VENICE 2 on the show and even captured footage on the Apple iPhone.

A Creative Force

In addition to the above narrative productions, the Sony Venice also proved to was used on several nonfiction projects and live events that were also nominated for this year’s Emmy Awards. 

Led once again by director Hamish Hamilton, producer Aaron Cooke and the technical wizards at the Funicular Goats, the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show starring Usher received three nominations this year.  Shot on nine Sony VENICE 2 systems and three original VENICE cameras, this live production saw nominations in Outstanding Variety Special, Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special, and Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special. This is the third year in a row that the Super Bowl Halftime Show used the Sony VENICE and was nominated for multiple Emmys.

The Sony VENICE and VENICE 2 can clearly thrive in a live production or commercial environment as well.

The Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas special, shot on the VENICE was not only nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special, but also for Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special. 

Also shot on the VENICE, The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy has been nominated for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program. 

In addition, the State Farm commercial Like a Good Neighbaaa, shot by DP Claudio Miranda on the VENICE 2, was nominated for Outstanding Commercial.

Seeing the Sony VENICE and VENICE 2 appear in so many Emmy nominated programs reveals how powerful it can be in the hands of creatives.
