‘Assembled: The Making of Loki’ - Now Streaming on Disney+ - Shot on VENICE

Anatomy of a Scene: Loki - Shot on VENICE

We take a detailed look at the show’s three-minute continuous sequence in the episode “Lamentis.” Images courtesy of Disney Plus/Marvel Studios. Published with permission of The ASC. Thor’s mischievous brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has found himself in quite a predicament. He’s been arrested by the Time Variance Authority for veering off his fated path and starting a new timeline “branch” that would have spurred the beginning of a multiverse. It’s a crime he’d never heard of and had no intention of committing. Now he’s on the run. Episode 3 of Loki — Disney Plus’ latest series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe — sees our titular antihero teamed up with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), a female “variant” of Loki from yet another timeline, as they attempt to escape an inhabited moon that’s on the verge of destruction. They race through the chaos of a neon-splashed city to reach the last space-bound transport. The screenplay for the episode — titled “Lamentis” and written by Bisha K. Ali — described this run for their lives as a long-take action sequence. In this month’s Shot Craft, we’ll take a detailed look at this three-minute continuous sequence, which was photographed by cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw.

Steven Bernstein: My name is Steven Bernstein. I'm a director, writer, and cinematographer and I'm here with a dear friend of mine, Gabriel Beristain, ASC, BSC, AMC. Gabriel is a polymath, a thinker, a cinematographer, but also very much a director and a leader of people. He is articulate and well-read, with an understanding of many things from politics to philosophy. He also speaks several languages; filmmaking is about the encoding of ideas in the unique languages available to us in cinema, and that isn’t limited to formalized spoken language. I often wonder if those who speak many languages have a better innate understanding of film, in that they recognize that different languages can tell the same story with different agreed codas. So it is with film language with the use of the camera and composition, which speaks to the audience. So it is with lighting. So it is with the rhythms of editing. So it is with so many filmmaking practices. Gabriel, welcome. Gabriel Beristain: Thank you so much, Steven. It's a pleasure to talk to you, as always, my eloquent, wonderful, friend. Steven Bernstein: I'm excited because you just shot Black Widow. You have shot many major films, but I am interested in your unique take on this one. I'd like to start by talking about your special sensibility; not only are you a director, a cinematographer and a producer, but you've worked on both important independent films, going all the way back to the seminal Caravaggio, and some very big action films like S.W.A.T. What a remarkable swath of experience. Could you first talk about the different approaches, if there are any, to all those different films and your different roles? And then, specifically, we'll start talking about how you shoot action.

Marvel Studios' Loki - Shot on VENICE - Now Streaming on Disney+

"In Marvel Studios' 'Loki,' photographed by DP Autumn Durald on VENICE, the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of 'Avengers: Endgame.' Kate Herron directs and Michael Waldron is head writer. After stealing the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), an alternate version of Loki is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline. They give Loki a choice, either be erased from existence due to being a "time variant," or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat. Loki becomes trapped in his own crime thriller, traveling through time and altering human history. Check out the trailer ABOVE.
